Well what do you know. I am 4 years into a second career as a programmer after 20+ years over the road driving. And the parallels are more then sitting in a chair for umpteen hours on end staring though glass. Both professions allow for quite a bit of autonomy in day to day decision making. Both are focused on solving problems all day long. Both allow for some flexibility on working hours (not strict 9-5). One thing that is so special about both professions is all the time you are 'allowed' to think. Although I now have more meetings then the quarterly safety meetings I had as a driver. But I consider myself so lucky to have found two careers that I absolutely love. But I have to say the *real truck drivers* used to hang out down in Sturbridge Mass at "New England Truck Stop"

Great thoughts. I love the idea of profession as lifestyle. This is definitely the case for many other professions as well, and it makes want to be a programmer all over again. What can I say, I just love coffee and whiteboards=).

By the way, your Gravatars are broken. Instead of using my email address (which I have provided) it's hashing 'unknown@gravatar.com'.

When was this meeting? I hadn't heard of Progmatica, but it would have been awesome to meetup with some programmers at Dysart's, which is about 5 minutes away from where I work. Anyways, Portland's too far for me at the moment, but please drop me a line the next time you guys are in Bangor.
